The hilly town of Salemi in southwestern Sicily is captured in soft, painterly strokes, suffusing the scene with that classic Italian light that for centuries has attracted artists from abroad. Favreau marked to the back that he painted it "sur le motif," otherwise known as 'en plein air' or painted outdoors, in July 1989.
