The french title, 'Nature Morte I' (still life in english), better alludes to the origins of the genre, being vanitas paintings. These compositions of objects contained symbolic allusions to mortality and the transience of life – this was done using overt objects like skulls or more subtly through flowers that wilt or food which decays. Kovacina's blooms have lost petals and fallen onto the table.
