This work is part of Forner's 'Mutants' series, a consideration of the future of humankind in response to growing space exploration. Since the 1950s, Forner's work was concerned with the theme of space, imagining new futures, dimensions, and creatures. De-contextualizing her mutants through the bright, solid backgrounds creates a new space for them to occupy outside of what is known and recognizable. These human/alien/other hybrids fill Forner's compositions, confronting the viewer with elements of the familiar and the unfamiliar.
